MediaTek to Unveil New Chip for Smartphones

Taiwanese fabless IC designer MediaTek announced on February 12 that the company will unveil its first chipset solution, codenamed MT6516, for use in Smartphones, according to a press release by MediaTek. The highly integrated MT6516 supports LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) resolution up to WVGA and MPEG-2 multimedia standard.

The new invention, which can be applied to products based on a variety of standards: including DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial), CMMB (China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting), and DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting ?Handheld), is set to debut at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2009, according to the same source.

On the same day, the company also demonstrated the company's first GSM/GPRS (Global System for Mobile Communications/General Packet Radio Service) single chipset solution featuring phone camera and high-speed USB, according again to MediaTek's press release.
